Quick Overview

"Dolakha is a scenic hill district in Bagmati Province, Nepal, featuring Charikot as its headquarters, the holy Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple, and the majestic Mount Gaurishankar. It is located about 133 km east of Kathmandu."

Dolakha District, located within Nepal's Bagmati Province, is a mesmerizing tapestry of deep-seated Himalayan history, profound spiritual ecosystems, and high-altitude alpine wonders. Spanning 2,191 square kilometers, this central hill district transitions dramatically from terraced mid-hill valleys to the towering glaciers of the Rolwaling Himalayan range. Dolakha holds a distinct place in geography as home to Mount Gaurishankar (7,134 meters), the sacred peak whose meridian dictates the standard time of Nepal. The district is hydro-ecologically carved by the roaring Tamakoshi River and stretches north to share a high-mountain international border with Tibet. The High Alpine Zones: Mountain passes like Kharidhunga (2,700m) and the ridges of Kalinchowk (3,842m) transform into winter snow wonderlands, drawing domestic snow tourists between December and February. The Valleys & Spring: As the altitude drops toward the headquarters of Charikot (1,970m), the climate turns temperate. In spring, dense sub-tropical forests erupt in vibrant shades of crimson and pink rhododendrons (Laligurans).Deep Cultural & Historical RootsBefore the unification of modern Nepal, Dolakha flourished as a vibrant, independent Newari kingdom and a crucial trade gateway connecting the Kathmandu Valley to Kuti in Tibet. Its ancient urban planning closely mimics the medieval aesthetics of Bhaktapur and Kathmandu.Numismatic Legacy: Dolakha is famous in history for minting the first-ever silver coins in Nepalese records under King Jaya Indra Singh Dev in the 16th century to facilitate trans-Himalayan commerce.Indigenous Communities: The old town remains an authentic bastion of unique Newari language, craftsmanship, and festivals that operate distinctly from Kathmandu's Newar traditions.
